Pasetta
![]() |
If any one person has ever made the small screen seem not only big, but larger than life, it is Marty Pasetta. With a track record as widely diverse and equally impressive as any of the countless television specials and extravaganzas he's produced and directed over the years, he has easily assured himself a permanent place in the annals of television. After all, beyond being singled out to create TV presentations of the Inaugural Galas for both President Carter and President Reagan, Marty is the only person to hold the distinctive Triple Crown of the industry's top awards, having been at the helm of a remarkable 17+ consecutive Academy Awards telecasts as well as producing and directing the Grammy Awards for eight years and the Emmy Awards for two years along the way. |
Given his seemingly endless list of credits over the years, it's no wonder his name is synonymous with excellence throughout the show business community. In the recent past, he produced and directed the ABC special "Ice Capades with Jason Bateman and Alyssa Milano" -- following a previous Ice Capades special starring Kirk Cameron, Rita Moreno and a host of Olympic medalists -- in addition to the same network's "All Star Tribute To Elizabeth Taylor" and "Second Annual Star Spangled Celebration of Independence Day," which helped launch another year of Project Literacy, U.S. One of the many television spectaculars which has helped make Marty just about as famous as the celebrities he works with, was a profile of Julio Iglesias' Welcome Back Tour of Spain, culminating in the singer's appearance before over 100,000 fans -- including Spain's king, president and prime minister, along with England's Princess Diana -- in Barcelona's soccer stadium. Just prior to that, Marty's highly prestigious agenda of activities entailed creating a mammoth Caesar's Palace anniversary special; traveling to France to film "A Night Out In Paris With George Burns" at such famous clubs as the Lido, Moulin Rouge and Follies Bergere; producing and directing the first lavish three-hour "Star Spangled Celebration" on July 4; producing a very special program highlighting Pope John Paul II's visit to America; creating the "Walt Disney World Celebrity Circus" for NBC; presenting the "Las Vegas 75th Anniversary Show" for ABC; and producing and directing the huge-scale Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration emanating concurrently from New York, Washington and Atlanta. Even a quick glance at some of Marty Pasetta's multi-media stylistically varied credits indicates that this is a man who has earned his international reputation for quality by tackling new challenges and giving audiences credit for being interested in more than the usual television fare. Not surprisingly, in fact, it was Marty who was responsible for the world's first satellite television broadcast; in this case, "Elvis Presley's Aloha From Hawaii," which also marked the King's first television performance in several years. What's more, it was Marty's "A Concert for the World" and "The World of Music Festival" (parts 1 and 2) for the MIDEM International Music Market in Cannes, France, which later pioneered worldwide satellite and ad hoc distribution. It was also Marty Pasetta who produced and directed the mammoth "Spirit of America Spectacular" starring the Beach Boys, which proved to be TV's first live, three hour syndicated simulcast concert, aired via satellite to 72% of the nation's home viewers and 86% of home radio listeners on the July 4th weekend in 1981. In addition, he has directed the "That's What Friends Are For" special to benefit AIDS research. This was the very first seven camera, high definition television special in the history of the business. Of particular significance, of course, is that Marty specializes in the highest risk shows of all -- live spectaculars. Moreover, he increases the possibility of encountering problems by shooting in many of the world's most difficult locations, ranging from the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, to Disneyland and the Queen Mary ocean liner. Nevertheless, the all-star casts and apparently limitless series of behind the scenes obstacles simply don't faze Marty, who says the secret of success is to generate a team spirit and to work together to ensure the best final product possible. His profound dedication to the highest standards extends back to the beginning of his illustrious career, when he served as a stage manager at KGO-TV in San Francisco and soon climbed the ladder to executive producer after graduating from the University of Santa Clara. In this period, he also picked up an enormous storehouse of technical and electronic knowledge which enabled him later on to show his crews what can and must be done. As it happened, he spent 16 years at KGO-TV, during which time he won an Emmy for a two-hour variety show. Since then, he has produced and/or directed "The Sound of Applause" (from the French Riviera); "Alabama and Friends;" "Texaco Star Theatre....Opening Night;" "The People's Choice Awards;" eight years of "American Film Institutes Salutes, to Lillian Gish, Henry Fonda, Fred Astaire, Frank Capra, John Houston and Alfred Hitchcock;" "Burnett 'Discovers' Domingo," starring Carol Burnett and Placido Domingo; the Michael Jackson/Captain EO opening at Disneyland; Disney World's anniversary special; the Beach Boy's 25th Anniversary celebration; Frank Sinatra's "Ol Blue Eyes Is Back," and "The Stars Salute Israel at 30," starring Barbara Streisand, Paul Newman,Henry Fonda and more. His other major efforts have included the internationally syndicated series, "The Monte Carlo Show;" "Gene Kelly - An American In Pasadena;" "Paul Anka in Monte Carlo;" "Barry Manilow in Concert;" "A Country Christmas;" "The Kraft All-Star Salute To Pearl Bailey;" "A Gift Of Song;" which resulted in an unprecedented collection of musical stars, including The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, the late Andy Gibb, Rod Stewart, Olivia Newton-John, Abba, Earth, Wind and Fire and the late John Denver, performing from the United Nations building in New York; and "Let Poland Be Poland," an international tribute produced in cooperation with the U.S. State Department whichwas designed for a global audience of 300 million. Another Pasetta creative specialty is reserved for the ever-popular game shows. In that capacity, he staged the long running hit "Jokers Wild" and the series which is the most popular syndicated show ever, "Wheel Of Fortune." He also has since developed a string of half-hour game shows with such interesting titles and premises as "Puzzle Game," "Name That Tune," "Hot Streak," "Catch Phrase," "Second Chance," "Two For The Money," "Perfect Pass," "Second Guess," "Name It and Claim It" and "Lingo." Several other network/syndicated game shows are in the works. Success has not dimmed Marty's sense of community service, as he somehow manages to find time in his busy schedule to donate his skills to the University of Santa Clara's annual Golden Circle Theatre show. He additionally has been and will continue to be the executive producer of the annual nationally televised Cerebral Palsy Telethon. Marty's children are also active in the industry as well. Most of all, though, what they have in common is the incomparable professionalism which has made Marty Pasetta one of the most versatile and heralded figures in the entertainment arena today. |
