Sacks

Born in 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, to Benjamin and Ida Sacks; David and his two brothers early traveled their separate paths. David's path led him to New York City and San Francisco where with the support of his loving wife, Ruth he became a broadcaster, entrepreneur and civic leader. He and Ruth shared a life of more than 50 years guiding their three children to adulthood. Later, after Ruth's passing in 1991, his larger circle of love expanded to include his dear friend and companion, Adelaide Moretti and her family.

In the 1960's, as Vice President of American Broadcasting Company and General manager of KGO radio and Television, David was well known to Northern California viewers through more than a thousand on-air editorials. A unique television executive of his time, he identified important issues, then marshaled his TV station staff to spearhead action aimed at achieving measurable results.

Among some of his favorite civic campaigns were "Summer Jobs for Students", "The Broadcast Skills Bank", and "The San Francisco Film Festival".

While with KGO-TV David helped develop and present programs for his station as well as the American Broadcasting Company network, including "Oh My Word", "The Gypsy Rose Lee Show", "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show", "The Rowan and Martin Show", and "The Herb Caen Show". San Francisco columnist Herb Caen inscribed a copy of one of his books, "To Dave ... who introduced me to the wonder ... and horror! ... of television, and somehow managed to retain his sanity, his humor and his job through it all".

With Bing Crosby and Charles Patterson, David produced "The San Francisco Experience", an exciting multi-media review of San Francisco's colorful past, and with its long-running local success, "Experience" shows were produced for New York, Hawaii, Hollywood, and other locales.

In 1966, David was named General Chairman of the San Francisco Film Festival for its tenth anniversary celebration. Films from 31 countries were exhibited and scores of Hollywood luminaries appeared. His innovation of actively involving all facets of Bay Area business and society leaders combined to make the festival the most talked about event of its kind.

His flair for innovation coupled with good business sense lead to his selection as the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce's "Man of the Year", and his appointment as a Director of such organizations as the San Francisco Ballet Guild, Better Business Bureau, and the California Broadcasters Association. Since 1988, he has served as the Chairman of the Board of SIFE Trust Fund, a mutual fund specializing in financial equities, and more recently was elected to the Board of the San Francisco Chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences. He was also a member of Bay Area Broadcast Legends.

David was an active member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts and First Church of Christ, Scientist, San Francisco. He has served as a consultant to The Mother Church, on the Board of Directors of Arden Wood Benevolent Association and most recently as the moderator of his branch church.

David Sacks pased away on Sunday July 14, 1996. He was 79. He was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle in 1988.
