Emmy Recipients - 2000

The 29th Annual Northern California Area Emmy Awards were presented tonight at a black tie event at The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The Emmy is awarded by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.San Francisco/Northern California is one of the eighteen chapters awarding local Emmys. Northern California is composed of television and cable stations from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries were aired during the 1999 calendar year.

The ballots, which were tallied by the accounting firm of Spalding & Company, totaled 49 Emmys from 158 nominations and 649 entries in 45 categories. Emmys are awarded to individuals, not stations, but here is the station count KRON, San Francisco, topped the list with 9 awards, followed by KPIX and ZDTV, San Francisco with 5 Next was KGO, San Francisco, KTVU, Oakland, and Fox Sports Net, each with 4.

Awards chair, David Mills, was surprised with the number of cable winners this year. In addition to Fox Sports Net and ZDTV, Access Sacramento, Bay TV, and Peninsula TV each had a winner.

The following individuals took home two statues each: Jim Joy, KRON; Nancy Juliber, ZDTV; Mike Sugerman, KPIX; Jim Swanson, KRON. A total of 121 statues were awarded.

"The Governors Award" a special Emmy, was presented to Terry Lowry, Bay Area TV news anchor, reporter and host, and Fred Zehnder, former news director KTVU, for lifetime achievement. "The Governors Citation" was given to Ysabel Duron and Faith Fancher for taking their personal battle against cancer to the public through their reporting. "The Governors Service Medallion," was presented to Stewart Heller and David Mills for their numerous contributions to the Academy. A special tribute was given in memory of Charles M. Schulz who was a member of the Academy and the NATAS Silver Circle. He had received the Governors Award in 1989.

Two $2,000 scholarships were also awarded at tonight's Emmy 2000 ceremonies. Christopher Moro, from the University of Hawaii, received the "Peter J. Marino Production Scholarship." Meg McKinney, Stanford University, received the "Sheldon Fay Videography Scholarship."

The evening continued with a buffet dinner and dancing to the Scott Singer Band at the Exploratorium. Guests enjoyed a great party and exploring the Exploratorium.
